The need for business grants for women is real and apparent. While women may own and operate more than nine million business concerns in the U.S., they receive a miniscule amount of funding in the form of business loans from such traditional sources as venture capital firms or banks. One reason for this is that, typically, women own smaller business operations that don’t require large sums of capital so their financing options are somewhat limited. A business grant is not easy to obtain and, as a result, start up capital is often borrowed from family members or an aspiring would-be business owner will end up maxing out her credit cards to get things going. This can cause problems with their personal finances. As an alternative, start up business loans are available that require unblemished credit histories and collateral that may be difficult for many women to produce. Here’s where business grants for women can mean so much, even when for a relatively small amount. According to Entrepreneur Magazine, women are more progressive than men and are more likely to earn a college degree, start a non-profit organization or launch a successful business. Yet, despite their successes in business and career, and the fact that they make up more than half the population, they are still discriminated against in many areas and treated as a minority. Women’s grants, especially small business grants for women, give them a leg up in an unfair system. Similar to affirmative action programs for other minorities, grants for women give them a way to get through a system that has always been unjust against their gender. A business grant can help a woman launch or expand a home- based business or start a non-profit organization. Here are a few interesting tidbits relating to women in business: Three-fourths of females earn less money than their male counterparts earn The majority of entrepreneurs in the U.S. are women (and single parents) Women have been proven to be more financially stable and financially responsible than men Millions of dollars per year are allocated to business grants for women and yet many grants go unclaimed. According to statistics, fewer than 15% of the women in the U.S. consider making a grant application. The money is there and waiting to be claimed. These grants have the means of empowering the recipients to build something better for themselves, their families and their communities. It might be worth a few minutes to see if you qualify.

The term ‘scholarship grants’ can be a confusing one, since scholarships & grants are two distinctly different types of financial aid but are often confused with one another because of their similarities. The main similarity is that both provide free money for college. In the U.S. today, the average cost of attending a private, four-year institution of higher learning is in excess of $20,000 per school year. This works out to well over two thousand dollars per month, which is an amount very few students are able to cover on their own. Without scholarships and grants for college, only the relatively few students coming from wealthy families would be able to pursue higher education. Those who opt to attend public university can expect to pay about half of that charged by private schools. Even community colleges may cost $500 or more per month to attend. Financial aid grants and scholarships have never been more needed. And, interestingly, because of the No Child Left Behind Act, more grant money for college is now available than ever before. Grants are primarily need-based while scholarships are usually merit-based. This ‘merit’, however, may fall into any of many, many categories. The most common basis for scholarships may be academic performance or athletic performance but there is a wide range of other criteria for merit awards. Being black, Hispanic, a single mom or even left-handed can qualify you for some scholarship money. Financial need is not usually part of the qualification requirements. Grants, on the other hand, are most typically awarded on a financial needs basis, although some are given for merit, this merit is almost always strictly of the academic achievement type. Some grants will consider a combination of merit and need both together. A grant for college is free, with nothing required in return for the recipient accepting the award. Scholarship money, on the other hand, may require the fulfillment of certain commitments, as in the case of military scholarships or athletic scholarship programs. Scholarship grants are made every academic year and it’s not uncommon for funds to go unclaimed. The main providers of grants are the federal and state governments, colleges and universities. The Pell Grant, which has been given out since 1972, is the main source of federal funding given to low income or financially disadvantaged students. To find out if you qualify, simply apply. Nearly everyone qualifies for some type of financial aid.

Scholarship grant money is available every year and much of it goes unclaimed, regularly, year after year. Scholarships and grants aren’t just available for those considered ‘poor’, although financial need is certainly one factor considered in determining allocation of scholarship money. Some other criteria might also include the following: BASIS FOR AWARDING SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT FUNDS Your scholastic track record and grade history Your athletic abilities in a particular sport or sports Your major area of study Race Religion Social activities or affiliations These are, of course, only a few of the many categories set up for the awarding of scholarships and grants. They come in all shapes and sizes. For one award, all you have to do to qualify is to be left-handed. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of others as well. Here are just a few of the scholarship preferences currently being considered: Scholarships for black males Scholarships for black females Scholarships for disabled students Scholarships for Hispanics Scholarships for mothers Scholarships for left-handed students Scholarships for low income families Scholarships for single African American single mothers And, as you can imagine from just looking at these additional seven categories, the list goes on and on. Scholarship grant money can literally be found for just about anything you could imagine (any maybe even some things that you can’t). Many of the amounts awarded may seem like an insubstantial sum in the grand scheme of things, but once you start combining one scholarship or grant with another they begin to add up nicely. And, in fact, many people qualify for several different scholarships & grants. There are also military scholarships and minority scholarships. To qualify for a particular minority grant you need only be: Asian Hispanic Black Interracial A woman A white male A Native American LGBT (which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender Just about everyone fits into at least one of those categories and many fit into more than one. In fact, it would be tough to name someone who doesn’t! When shopping for scholarship grant funds, the more you look the more you’ll find. The only way to determine if you qualify for a particular program is to apply. Beware of scholarship scams. There are plenty of good sites to be found online, especially the government sponsored ones. Good hunting!

Finding a grant for college financial aid is easier than ever for a couple of reasons. For one, the Internet makes it simple and quick to locate information and instructions relating to the various grant programs currently available. In addition, as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), more funds have been made available than in the past years. Very few students (or their families) are able to pay for college out of pocket these days. As costs continue to escalate college grant money and scholarships for college have become, for some, the only option in their pursuit of higher education. Federal and state government programs provide the lion’s share of college grant money, although colleges, universities and private organizations are all involved in this area. While a specific grant for college expenses is often likely to be based on financial need, some are merit based and fall into various categories. As an example, the following can readily be found: Grants for minority women Grants for mothers Grants for disabled persons Grants for low income students Hispanic grants Medical grants Training grants This, in fact, is just a short selection of the many grants available. There are even specific grants for women artists! So many grants are available it’s hard to imagine that just about everyone doesn’t fit into at least one or more categories. Perhaps the most popular and most widely awarded government grant is known the Pell Grant. In existence since 1972, this program is designed to provide aid to financially disadvantaged students. The first step in applying for this or any other federally funded college grant is to fill out and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once this form has been filed the applicant will then be eligible to receive grant money from any program for which he or she is qualified. The FAFSA is also required for many state grants as well, and properly submitting it should be the first step in attempting to obtain any grant money. It will also need to be filled out again each subsequent year that financial aid is requested. Attempting to obtain a grant for college is a worthwhile endeavor and can bring needed financial benefits to the aspiring student. Free government money may be the deciding factor in your ability to attend a school of your choice. Due diligence is required!

Scholarships and grants for college students are similar in that both provide educational funding which the recipient is not required to pay back. Scholarship programs are made available by a wide variety of groups and organizations and may be awarded in a vast number of categories. College grants, on the other hand, are much narrower in scope and are most often provided by either state or federal government entities. There are exceptions, such as grants given by a college or university. College scholarships may be given based on scholastic achievement, athletic ability, race, religious affiliation, social group affiliation or even something as arbitrary as whether or not the applicant is left handed. Grants for college, on the other hand, are awarded in two main categories: Grants based on financial need Grants based on scholastic merit The U.S. government is one of the biggest providers of grants for college students, closely followed by state governments. The initial step in obtaining a federal grant is to complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This must be done every year to receive ongoing funding. Of all the different grants for college students, Federal Pell Grants are the most common. This federal government money is earmarked for financially disadvantaged students and the amounts of the awards are determined by financial need. As the student’s family’s ability to contribute to the educational costs changes so does the amount of the grant assistance. Those who are in the most severe financial need fall under a different program called the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant Program (FSEOG). This program typically grants money only to those whose EFC (Expected Family Contribution) is zero. This information is obtained from the applicant’s SAR (Student Aid Report). Any money left over in this program’s fund will normally trickle down to the next most financially disadvantaged students. Grants based on merit are normally doled out by state governments and, in some of these, scholastic performance and financial need will be calculated together. Application for state funding will require a different process than that for federal grant money, but may also require the filing of the above-mentioned FAFSA. Filling out and filing this form should be the first step in any grant application procedure. Grants for college students make it possible for many who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford higher education to attend college or university. Grants are also available for certain technical or vocational training schools. Take a look at what’s out there. You may very well qualify for some free money!

If either you or a family member is considering attending college or university in the future, free college grants are worth looking into. Applying for a grant is easy and academic grants exist based on both need and/or merit. Government grant money is, in fact, doled out to hundreds of thousands of students every year and you may, in fact, qualify to receive some of this financial aid. If you’re one of the few able to pay for college out of your own pocket (or, more likely your family’s pocket) then free scholarships and grants for college expenses may not seem too important. Those who are in that position are definitely in the minority and, in fact, most of those wishing to attend an institution of higher learning today will have to avail themselves of at least one or more of the following: Federal government grants State grants or state assistance programs Scholarship programs Loans College grants and scholarships given by the school where you plan to study Free college grants come from a wide variety of sources including many private organizations with a specific agenda they wish to perpetuate through their choice of young hopefuls whom they choose to help educate. The biggest contributor to the effort remains, however, the government, on both the state and federal levels. Govt grants are based primarily on the financial need of the applicant and his or her family. Some FEDERAL PROGRAMS include: Federal Pell Grant – designed to give financial aid to those considered underprivileged or without proper means of obtaining a higher education without use of financial grants FSEOG Grant – stands for Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. Designed to give financial aid only to those students most in need, whose family situation prevents the student from the ability to contribute ANY amount toward his or her own education Federally-funded work-study programs – provide opportunities to have an on-campus job which is worked as a means to defray the costs of schooling Montgomery GI Bill – one of the oldest federal educational grant programs (1944), this provides government money for qualified military veterans to pursue college, technical or vocational programs Free college grants, both public and private, are out there and waiting. It may seem surprising, but most people qualify for at least one grant program and often for several. The only way to find out if YOU qualify is to apply. One single, simple application can put you in the running for all applicable federal programs. Take a few minutes and just do it!

Have you thought of applying for a university grant to help pay some of your tuition costs and living expenses? This type of monetary award is essentially free because it never has to be repaid and you can have several such school grants, thus reducing the amount of money you need to borrow for your education. You do have to be enrolled in a degree program at a university to apply, which means you probably already have a student loan. If you are successful in your application, then you can save the money from the loan to use as repayment when you graduate. There are basically two types of university grants – those that are based on financial need and those that are based on academic performance. You don’t have to get high marks in all your courses to qualify. There are also grants that are specific to a particular degree program, such as nursing grants or school grants for women who want to pursue careers in engineering or other non-traditional careers. There are also grants available for minorities and for adults who want to return to school to get a higher education. When you start looking for a university grant you will see that the list of available grants is quite lengthy. The task is then to sort through all the grants to choose the ones for which you are eligible. If you are applying for a grant that is based on financial need, you do need to give the source of the funding permission to look at your income tax returns to verify that you do need this money to help you with your expenses. The federal government is the greatest source of funding when you want to apply for a university grant. You do have to submit an application form, but one of the criteria is that you must also have applied for a student loan. Without this additional application, you will not even be considered for the grant. You do have to be responsible in taking steps to pay for your own education and not rely solely on school grants to pay the costs.

Pell Grants are one of the types of grants available from the US government to help students finance part of their college education. In order to be eligible for this type of educational grant, you must demonstrate financial need. The purpose of the grant is to help students from low-income families to obtain the money they need to help equip them with the skills needed to find jobs in today’s world. The grants are for older men and women returning to school as well as those who are fresh out of high school. There is a maximum amount in the Pell Grants that are awarded each year. For the 2009-2010 school year the maximum amount one can receive in this grant is $5350, but there is an additional $2675 available if the recipient intends to continue with studies during the summer semester. However, with the rising costs of post-secondary education, these educational grants only pay for a small portion of the costs involved in getting a degree or diploma. When you complete the application for one of the Pell Grants, the amount you receive depends on several factors. Families are expected to contribute a certain amount towards a child’s education if possible. The amount of this contribution is determined according to the family income and details of this must be provided in the application. Students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree or those who are studying to become teachers are able to apply for Pell Grants. The grant money can be paid directly to the educational institution or to the student and is paid once a semester. This means that a student who qualifies for the full amount of the grant in this school year is $2675 per semester. Anyone who is familiar with the cost of post-secondary education knows that this is far from being enough to pay the student expenses.

Medical grants for thousands of dollars are available from various sources to help doctors and medical researchers to help with the high cost of medical school and in funding research projects. Government programs exist to provide this funding, especially for those pursuing a career in the field of medicine. Private businesses and non-profit organizations play a role in providing school grants and grants for medical research. Medical grants provide a large part of the funding for doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to offset the cost of tuition and books for their education. The college or university you attend has all the resources you need for finding which grants you are eligible to apply for. It will be well worth taking the time to get a list of medical grants that are available for you. You don`t have to limit yourself to applying for only one medical grant. Since the majority of them have the same deadline date each year, the best advice is to apply for as many as you can. You can have a school grant from more than one source in any calendar year. Getting two or more grants means that you don`t have to borrow as much money to pay for your college and living expenses. When completing the applications for medical grants, you will be asked to write a short essay of why you are attending medical school or why you want to pursue a career in the medical field. You do have to be as expressive as possible so that you application stands out. Although these grants are free and do not have to be repaid when you graduate, the criteria for being awarded one of them are very stringent. Therefore it is essential that you fill out the application as thoroughly as possible. Financial need is usually the main determining criteria for obtaining a medical grant. However, there are often grants available for those who plan to work in a particular region that may be in need of qualified health professionals. There are also grants available for those who are of a specific ethnic background and even for those whose parents work with or have an affiliation with a particular agency. You should consider all your options when applying for an educational grant because you do need all the funding you can get.

The cost of paying for a college education places a great financial burden on the student and parents. One year of university can cost about $20,000 in tuition, books, housing and transportation, and this doesn’t include food and money for clothing and entertainment. Therefore every student who has enrolled in a program in a university or college, whether it is a one-year course or a four-year degree, should look at applying for an educational grant. A grant is money that you don’t have to repay and there are many different types of grants to consider. Grants are different from scholarships and student loans. In most cases, you do have to apply for a student loan and supply your financial information along with your application. This is essential if you are applying for an educational grant that is based on financial need. The committee reviewing the application will calculate the cost of your academic year and apply their formula to your finances to come up with the amount you are awarded in a grant. Although there is usually a maximum amount for each grant, you may receive only a portion of this based on your individual circumstances. There are different categories you can look at when you apply for an educational grant. In addition to being based on financial need, there are school grants for specific minorities, grants for women, grants for adults returning to school and grants for specific career choices. There are also many student grants that are based on academic excellence and your financial situation has no bearing in these cases – only your grades. Some colleges and organizations offer educational grants for students, as do private businesses. However, the federal and state governments are perhaps the greatest source of funding in school grants in order to have as many people as possible attain a post-secondary degree or diploma so that they have the skills necessary to work in today’s economy.
