Finding a grant for college financial aid is easier than ever for a couple of reasons. For one, the Internet makes it simple and quick to locate information and instructions relating to the various grant programs currently available. In addition, as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), more funds have been made available than in the past years.
Very few students (or their families) are able to pay for college out of pocket these days. As costs continue to escalate college grant money and scholarships for college have become, for some, the only option in their pursuit of higher education. Federal and state government programs provide the lion’s share of college grant money, although colleges, universities and private organizations are all involved in this area.
While a specific grant for college expenses is often likely to be based on financial need, some are merit based and fall into various categories. As an example, the following can readily be found:
- Grants for minority women
- Grants for mothers
- Grants for disabled persons
- Grants for low income students
- Hispanic grants
- Medical grants
- Training grants
This, in fact, is just a short selection of the many grants available. There are even specific grants for women artists! So many grants are available it’s hard to imagine that just about everyone doesn’t fit into at least one or more categories.
Perhaps the most popular and most widely awarded government grant is known the Pell Grant. In existence since 1972, this program is designed to provide aid to financially disadvantaged students. The first step in applying for this or any other federally funded college grant is to fill out and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once this form has been filed the applicant will then be eligible to receive grant money from any program for which he or she is qualified. The FAFSA is also required for many state grants as well, and properly submitting it should be the first step in attempting to obtain any grant money. It will also need to be filled out again each subsequent year that financial aid is requested.
Attempting to obtain a grant for college is a worthwhile endeavor and can bring needed financial benefits to the aspiring student. Free government money may be the deciding factor in your ability to attend a school of your choice. Due diligence is required!
