Scholarship grant money is available every year and much of it goes unclaimed, regularly, year after year. Scholarships and grants aren’t just available for those considered ‘poor’, although financial need is certainly one factor considered in determining allocation of scholarship money. Some other criteria might also include the following:
BASIS FOR AWARDING SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT FUNDS
- Your scholastic track record and grade history
- Your athletic abilities in a particular sport or sports
- Your major area of study
- Race
- Religion
- Social activities or affiliations
These are, of course, only a few of the many categories set up for the awarding of scholarships and grants. They come in all shapes and sizes. For one award, all you have to do to qualify is to be left-handed. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of others as well. Here are just a few of the scholarship preferences currently being considered:
- Scholarships for black males
- Scholarships for black females
- Scholarships for disabled students
- Scholarships for Hispanics
- Scholarships for mothers
- Scholarships for left-handed students
- Scholarships for low income families
- Scholarships for single African American single mothers
And, as you can imagine from just looking at these additional seven categories, the list goes on and on. Scholarship grant money can literally be found for just about anything you could imagine (any maybe even some things that you can’t). Many of the amounts awarded may seem like an insubstantial sum in the grand scheme of things, but once you start combining one scholarship or grant with another they begin to add up nicely. And, in fact, many people qualify for several different scholarships & grants.
There are also military scholarships and minority scholarships. To qualify for a particular minority grant you need only be:
- Asian
- Hispanic
- Black
- Interracial
- A woman
- A white male
- A Native American
- LGBT (which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
Just about everyone fits into at least one of those categories and many fit into more than one. In fact, it would be tough to name someone who doesn’t!
When shopping for scholarship grant funds, the more you look the more you’ll find. The only way to determine if you qualify for a particular program is to apply. Beware of scholarship scams. There are plenty of good sites to be found online, especially the government sponsored ones. Good hunting!
